God Over Government

If you own a phone you are probably well aware of all the things that have been going on in the USA recently. There was an assassination attempt on President Trump, just a few days ago, and just a few days after that President Biden stated he would no longer seek re-election. These are two massive events that have happened in just this last week, but over the last several years we have seen immense division, hatred, and all other sorts of sin.
The topic of this blog is not on the state of our current world, but on the sin Christian commit in their reactions to it. Amongst Christians I have seen two reactions to the craziness of this world. I have seen those who put their complete faith in God, acknowledging that He is indeed in control and nothing surprises Him or derails His plans. And then the second reaction is panic and worry. It breaks my heart to see the number of evangelical Christians on Facebook who are terrified of who will become president.
Before proceeding I want to make something clear. I think it is wise for the Christian to be aware of what is happening. I think a Christian should vote for the candidate that they believe adheres to Biblical values. I have no issue with being informed or being somewhat invested in the political future of this country. What I do have an issue with is when a Christian feels their future is directed by a politician and not God. I do have an issue with a Christian whose life is characterized by worry and anxiety because their faith is in Trump and not God. I do have an issue with those who believe Biden is their savior, not Christ.
If you are reading this and rolling your eyes and thinking of how you do not care what I think, I completely understand that. Let's look to what God says about these things. God does not speak much on political elections, but He does speak much on worry, anxiety, and doubt.
Doubt -
James 1:6-8
But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
Worry -
Psalm 27:1
The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the defense of my life;
Whom shall I dread?
Psalm 91:1-2
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
Will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress,
My God, in whom I trust!”.
Anxiety -
Philippians 4:6-7
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
The Bible has much to say on these things. The solution is generally simple, put your faith on God and not in man. Look to the promises God has made and has kept, that is where our security comes from. The whole chapter of Psalm 91 is a wonderful chapter about the security that is found in the trust of the Lord. And that right there is the solution. There is a unique comfort and safety that is offered only to the believer. A complete reliance upon One who has never been wrong, and upon One who has never let us down, God. He asks us simply to trust Him, and He has shown time and time again that He will not let us down.
So to the Christian I ask this, do you find that your faith is more in our Sovereign Savior, or in the hands of the politicians you vote for? The answer should be simple, the answer should be quick, but I fear the answer will not always be right.
The Wickedness of Our Nation
Christian, I write this in hopes that we will all realize we serve a God who is not surprised. A God who can not be overpowered, a God who is sovereign over all things and laughs at the schemes of a wicked and sinful people.
Psalm 37:12-15
The wicked plots against the righteous
And gnashes at him with his teeth.
13 The Lord laughs at him,
For He sees his day is coming.
14 The wicked have drawn the sword and bent their bow
To cast down the afflicted and the needy,
To slay those who are upright in conduct.
15 Their sword will enter their own heart,
And their bows will be broken.
When I struggle with the very truths that I have written about in this blog, this is a verse I go to. When my faith is wavering, when I find worry and anxiety creeping in, I remind myself of this verse. He is in control, He laughs at the schemes of the wicked world, and their schemes are nought against Him.
So in closing, we should vote, we should pray, we should be aware, we should be invested in actively trying to be Christlike in a world that is anything but. But one thing we absolutely can not be doing, is putting our hope in this world, over our hope in our Savior. We can not worry, we can not be anxious, we can not be fearful, because we serve a God who takes these things away from His people, if they will just put their faith in Him.
